One of the most underrated directors of the 90’s, Alex Proyas, seems to have been hanging on to the industry by a thread as of late. A veteran of music videos, Proyas exploded onto the feature film scene with late-Brandon Lee classic The Crow, and from there, went on to make one of the most incredulously overlooked sci-fi films ever, the hypnotic Dark City, in 1998. The last significant work of his was hugely successful, but good-at-best Will Smith vehicle I, Robot.
Now, having signed on to helm Universal’s Dracula Year Zero, Proyas is setting his sights back upon what he does best: dark, moody, atmospheric storytelling that lands somewhere between science fiction and horror-noir. The film is said to be a creative mash-up of both the historical accounts of Dracula and those of Bram Stoker’s. Recent news that blockbuster behemoth Sam Worthington is set to play the titular role, only boasts the films chances breathing new, exciting life into age-old horror classic.
The films producer, Michael De Luca speaks exclusively with Collider about the intentions of this project and his work on Nicholas Cage’s upcoming Drive Angry.
