For anyone out there that isn’t familiar with any of the countless incarnations of ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ series, here is a quick overview. The films follow a group of teenagers who all share a common, horrifying bond: They are being haunted in their dreams a frighteningly disfigured man named Freddy Kruger. If they want to stay alive, they need to stay awake. Generally, it’s a pretty futile effort, though the kill scenes lend themselves to some sweet imagery!
The latest Freddy rendition is a genuine remake of the Wes Craven’s 1984 original classic, with Jackie Earle Haley (’Watchmen’) donning the trademark set of claws, and burned-leather skin in the title role. Rumors have been flying that Haley is sight to behold as Kruger, but the rest of the film is struggling to break free of the so-so remake curse that seems to accurately describe just about every horror revamp in the last five years.
Bloody-disgusting.com recently posted the new trailer for the film, and I must say, it doesn’t look half as bad as it could have. The guiding principles of the story line are hard to screw up and beyond that, the character of Freddy Kruger has few rivals in the contemporary horror world in terms of originality, shock and awe. A sincere attempt at bringing the murderous boogyman back for a new generation is a welcomed one.
